![]() ![]() There are also special leveling upgrades that occur every 10 years starting at 20. Once you hit age 45 though, Strength and Agility cost 2 points and Arcane only costs 1 point. At age 25 (you start at 18), Arcane costs 2 points instead of 3. As you get older in the game, the cost of stat upgrades actually changes. I likened this to Arcane being wisdom that a younger person would not possess. Arcane though costs 3 points to level up each time. Only one skill point is required to level those stats. At the beginning of the game, you are young and it is natural to increase strength or agility. The dying/aging mechanic also has an effect on how you spend skill points. Vitality boosts your health and Arcane affects your dragon heart (this is the game’s version of an Estus flask) and magical abilities. As you find new weapons, you will notice that they will either have a strength or agility affinity meaning that if you are higher in one or the other stat, you should use that type of weapon. The starter ax and sword favor strength and agility respectively. ![]() As you explore, you will find different weapons to use. Strength and Agility are tied directly to weapon damage, blocking, and dodging. When you do level up, you also get two skill points to spend in the following: Strength, Agility, Arcane, and Vitality. Leveling up will grant a full heal but that usually does not happen in a one on one fight. ![]() The lifesteal came in handy in quite a few situations as healing does take a few seconds and is limited. I did find the buff after a dodge lacking as I generally rolled away from the enemy and then could not close the gap in time to make use of the buff. The stones also provide mini buffs after a successful dodge or parry. ![]() In my travels, I also found a shadow stone which granted lifesteal when attacking. The fire stone will grant all attacks fire damage (quite useful against tree-based enemies – sorry Smokey). There will be a third meter below the health and stamina ones and once filled, you can activate for a short duration buff. The stones grant you some special abilities in relation to your weapon attacks. In addition to your basic weapon attacks, you can equip powerful stones, the first of which is fire-based. Missing a parry or dodge does not spell instant doom. Unlike Souls games, combat is quite forgiving. Once you learn attack patterns, it does allow for some recklessness but overall, it is better to have a plan in combat. You need to find your opportunities to attack. The previously mentioned Souls similarities also include patience. Stamina regenerates over time, meaning you cannot infinitely roll or attack relentlessly. Attacking, dodging, parrying, running are all governed by a stamina meter. The more agile your character is, the easier it is to dodge incoming attacks. I have never really been able to parry in any game for that matter so thankfully, there is a dodge. Parrying at the appropriate time will briefly stun your opponent, giving you a small window to unload on them. Your shield can block (duh), be used to slam enemies in the face, or parry. (On a side note, what did we call this type of combat pre-Souls?) The charged attack leaves you slightly vulnerable but is a multi-hit combo that will do massive damage. Similar to most Souls games, you have light and heavy attacks as well as a charged up attack. You start with a sword (faster) or ax (slower but more powerful) and a shield. This shore sure looks familiar…Ĭombat in Chronos is strictly melee-based which is a slight departure from the multitude of weaponry found in Remnant. Exploration is key to victory but there are otherworldly threats to contend with on your journey. The labyrinth is ever-changing and much larger than you will find. Aging is not just an appearance thing either as I will discuss shortly. The “lifelong” part comes about because of a very unique dying mechanic. Chronos tells the tale of a young hero who embarks on a lifelong (wait for it) quest to solve the mysteries of the labyrinth and save their home from evil. ![]()
